Jute is a natural bast fibre, a vegetable fibre composed of cellulose which is the main building material of all plants, like all natural fibres, jute is totally biodegradeable. Bast fibre grows the entire length of the plant stalk from roots to tip. Groups of fibres are contained in the pithy layer between the thin outer bark and the woody core.
When discarded, jute totally decomposes putting valuable nutrients back into the soil.

n the marine environment plastic bag litter is lethal, killing at least 100,000 birds, whales, seals and turtles every year. After an animal is killed by plastic bags its body decomposes and the plastic is released back into the environment where it can kill again.
In the UK alone, we use 150 million plastic bags per week, the majority of 
which end up on landfill sites or being burnt, which releases a plethora of toxic chemicals into the air.
Only 1 in every 200 bags is recycled and this requires energy and resources to collect and process the bags. A person’s use of a plastic checkout bag can be counted in minutes, however long it takes to get from the shop to the home, but plastic shopping bags can take between 15 and 1000 years to break down in the environment.
However, plastic bag pollution is a threat to our ecosystems that we can do something about.
